Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for deck operations
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for carrying out deck operations and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the work activities
   • Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to, during and on completion of work activities and ensure briefings/handover details are communicated
   • Confirm availability and status of necessary permits Confirm availability of necessary auxiliary utilities
2. Carry out deck operations
   • Carry out deck operations safely
   • Identify faults and take appropriate corrective actions within functional responsibility
   • Attend to spillages
   • Conform to safe working practices
3. Assist drill crew as directed
   • Place and tier tubulures in racks
   • Measure and label tubulures and record details
   • Operate air tugger winches
   • Assist with positioning blow out prevention (BOP) over moonpool
   • Assists crane operator in supplying marine riser and moving tools to the drill floor
4. Operate pneumatic and electric power tools
   • Operate pneumatic and electric power tools
   • Identify faults with equipment and repair or report to relevant personnel
5. Provide labour for loading and discharge of helicopters as directed
   • Use approved safety approach sectors for access to and from the aircraft
   • Fuel aircraft under the direction of the aircraft captain and using approved fuelling procedures
   • Lift/move baggage and cargo between rig and helicopter using correct lifting techniques
6. Provide labour for making up drilling mud
   • Read, interpret, confirm and apply mud safety data sheet
   • Apply correct lifting techniques for handling of sack material
7. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Report issues identified with plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of carrying out deck operations including:

apply legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for carrying out deck operations

carry out duties of a crane chaser/dogger according to company and statutory requirements

demonstrates completion of carrying out deck operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

selecting and fitting correct stinger/slings appropriate for crane load

placing, measuring, labelling and recording details of tubulures

operate power tools

wearing appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment during operation of power tools

assisting in running/recovery of bop stack

assisting in supply of marine riser and equipment to drill floor

assisting in loading/discharge and fuelling of helicopter

assisting Derrickman in making up drilling mud

reading and interpreting standard operating procedures, work instructions and data sheets

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following in applying the carry out deck operations through:

completeing deck operations

applying company and statutory safety guidelines, procedures and practices

applying safe operating procedures

using equipment operations

following reporting procedures

understanding reasons for identification and care of samples including storage and transport

complying with occupational health, safety and environment requirements and procedures

using of safety data sheet (SDS)
